Why did you want to do an MFS?

I saw the thesis as an opportunity to do something outside the framework of the University Hospital of Umeå, where medical students spend most of their education. Older students I know from the programme had told me about their MFS experience with research in Peru, and I decided to create a project and apply for an MFS.

What are some of your takeaways from your MFS?

An opportunity to see a new part of the world and a broader perspective on research. I gained insight into data collection and fieldwork in South Africa and shook hands with experienced researchers at the WHO. We are now working to publish the article in a journal. On top of this, a pile of unforgettable memories from train journeys and hikes.

What were the main challenges?

For me, the biggest challenge was staying focused. It was very exciting to be in a place so different from anything I had seen before. At the same time, I learnt how to communicate with researchers via email, who has which task in the hierarchy, and how to structure research. All this balanced with experiencing the intense South African daily life.

Do you have any practical tips for students thinking about doing an MFS?

Do it! Go! Try to plan as best you can but be flexible. Allow plenty of time for meetings, both personal and professional.
