Exchange programmes
Erasmus+: exchange studies in Europe
The most common exchange programme is Erasmus+. This includes many of Umeå University's exchange places that are offered within a specific subject, i.e. places that are directly connected to your department. There are also exchange places within Erasmus+ that students at a certain faculty can apply for, but also places that all students at Umeå University can apply for, so-called university-wide exchange places.
- Part of the European Union Erasmus+ mobility programme
- Mobility is supported by the Erasmus+ stipend, including possibilites for travel grant
- Includes universities within the EU and partner countries.
Nordplus/Nordlys: exchange studies in the Nordic countries
Nordplus is the Nordic Council of Ministers' mobility programme, at bachelor's and master's levels, for the Nordic and Baltic countries. Within Nordplus, you can study or do an internship in another Nordic or Baltic country for a period of 1–12 months.
- Includes universities in Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
- Opportunity to apply for scholarships and travel grants is available.
- Possibility to do a shorter exchange, from five working days up to one month, through so-called express mobility.
- Opportunity to apply for a scholarship plus a sum for travel expenses. The size of the travel allowance varies depending on which country you travel to.
Nordplus network
If your department is part of a Nordplus network, you must primarily apply for an exchange place through that. Examples of a Nordplus network are Nordtek (technical-science education) and Norek (education in business and economics). Get in touch with your international contact person to find out if you can apply for an exchange place within Nordplus via your department.
Nordlys – university-wide exchange places
If it is not possible to study abroad via your department, you can apply for an exchange place via the university-wide network Nordlys. You can find which universities are included on Nordlys' website. You can also search in Solemove. You cannot apply for an exchange place within Nordlys if your department has an agreement with the university you are interested in applying to.
North2north: exchange studies at the Arctic Circle
The exchange programme North2north is a network within the University of the Arctic. Through the exchange programme, you can go to partner universities that are also part of the network. Which universities it is possible to apply to can vary between different academic years.
- Universities in the northern parts of the United States, Canada, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, France and Great Britain.
- A chance for scholarship, but not a guarantee. The Swedish Institute finances the scholarship.
Study places at a North American university
Tuition-free exchange places at a North American higher education institution in Canada and the northern United States are distributed among applicants from all the higher education institutions participating in the North2north programme. Students from all member countries thus compete for places.
Swiss-European mobility program
Swiss Programme for Erasmus+ for higher education is called Swiss-European Mobility Programme SEMP. SEMP gives students the opportunity to study at universities in Switzerland.
- Mobility is supported by the Swiss government with a stipend (approx. EUR 500 per month)
- Students are not eligible for Swedish student finance from CSN if they accept the stipend from the Swiss government.
Agreements not part of an exchange programme
Bilateral agreements
Bilateral agreements are individual agreements between two universities that are not part of any mobility programme. This means there are no automatic financial support (scholarships). Universities can be found around the world.
