If you need to retake an exam

If you have failed an exam, you have the right to retake it – that means to get another attempt at passing the exam. This page presents a brief summary of what retaking an exam means and how it works. More information about grades and assessments can be found in the University's rules, which you can also access on this page.

Exams are a form of assessment

All courses include some form of assessment, which are intended for you to demonstrate that you have learnt enough on the course to achieve the intended learning outcomes described in the syllabus. After the exam, the course examiner will decide on a grade. If you fail the exam, you will be given the opportunity to do a retake.

Retake an exam – a part of the course

If the mode of assessment takes the form of a written exam, the course coordinator has also booked a time and a date for a retake. You should be able to see the time and place of both the first exam and the retake in your course schedule.

The first retake opportunity should normally be offered no later than two months after the first exam. There must be at least ten working days between the time you are notified of the results of your first exam and the date of the retake. If the first exam date is in May or June, the retake date may be offered within three months. There may be exceptions to these rules, which you can read about in the Rules for grades and examination.

In order to accommodate students with children or different religious beliefs, the regular and retake exams must be scheduled on different days of the week.

Catch-up exams are usually offered once or twice a year

In addition to the retake exam, you will also be given the opportunity to do a catch-up exam. You must be given the opportunity to do at least one catch-up exam within one year of the first exam.

A catch-up exam means that the responsible department has booked a time for exams in an exam hall, when all or most of the students who have studied a course at the department have the opportunity to take an exam for courses or modules for which they have not been awarded a passing grade. Most commonly, catch-up exams are held just before the start of the autumn semester and in the gap between the autumn semester and the following spring semester.

If it has been a while since you took the course you want to be assessed on, the syllabus may have expired or undergone major changes. This may affect your eligibility for a retake. Read the Rules for grades and examinations to find out what applies if that is the case for you.

Remember – always sign up for exams!

Just like with regular exams, you must sign up at least ten working days before the exam date in order to do a retake or a catch-up exam. You cannot register late. If you do not register for the exam on time, you will not be able to take it at that time.

Most often, you sign up for the retake or catch-up exam yourself in Ladok. If you cannot find the exam date in Ladok that you wish to sign up for, you can turn to your study administrator.
