The main tasks of the student unions are to safeguard student interests and participate in improving courses and degree programmes, and your study conditions.

What is a student union?

A student union is an association of students that has applied to the University Board and been granted the status as a student union. Union status is valid for three years, after which associations that would like to retain their status must apply again.

The main purpose of a student union is to improve the quality of your education and your experience as a student (Higher Education Act, Chapter 4, Section 9).

You do not automatically become a member of a student union upon admission to the University. Instead, you can apply for membership. There are many benefits to being a member, including fun activities for students. It is important to note, however, that the student unions are there for you and will work to improve your education even if you are not a member.

Three student unions at Umeå University

There are three student unions that work to ensure the quality of your education and your time as a student: Umeå Medical Sciences Student Union, Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology, and Umeå Student Union. The student unions are large and take different approaches in organising their activities. This can take the form of sections, student associations, groups, or a mixture of these. Which association, section or group you belong to depends on which student union you join and which programme or courses your attend.
