What the UMU card is used for
Access to premises
The UMU card gives you access to the premises you need for your course even after office hours. The access function is based on the courses you are registered for.
However, the UMU card does not function as an access card to premises at the University Hospital of Umeå (NUS). Contact your department for information about access to NUS.
Library card
Your UMU card works as a library card at the University Library, Medical Library, Arts Campus Library, and Archives and Special Collections while you are a student.

Printing and copying
You can print, copy and scan via the University's printing system UMU print. In order to print, you need to add money to your account. To get a printout from a printer, use your UMU card and your pin code.
How to apply for an UMU card
1. To apply for an UMU card, you must first activate your UMU ID.

Pick up your UMU card
You choose in the UMU card self-service portal where you want to pick up your card. When the card is ready, you will receive a notification in the portal. You will also receive an email to the email address you have registered in Ladok. Remember to bring a proof of identity when picking up the card.

Log into the UMU card portal with your UMU ID to order your UMU card, change your pin code, block your card and more. Change language to English in the top-right corner.
Rules for the UMU card
Umeå University has rules that you need to approve to borrow books and to access premises with your UMU card. When you upload your photo for the UMU card, you automatically accept the rules listed below, as well as the loan rules at the Umeå University Library. You should therefore read the rules before you upload your photo.
Read the rules for the UMU card
- You should always present the UMU card upon request by a security guard or other authorised staff, and the authorisation for premises must be verified by the UMU card being tested in the card reader of the premises.
- The UMU card is personal and may not be lent to someone else.
- The card and code must not be stored together.
- Misplaced, lost and found UMU cards must immediately be reported to Infocenter.
- If you should break the card, you need to pay for a new card.
- Never allow entry to an unauthorised person with your card or by unlocking the door.
- There are specific entry rules for some premises and buildings that should be complied with. Please contact Infocenter for information on what entry rules apply.
Other information
- Breach of these rules may result in the card being blocked. The card may also be confiscated for further investigation. A serious breach of rules may result in a police report.
- All usage of the UMU card is logged into the access card system. If necessary, log lists may be used for checking entry and exit. The data is stored for two years.
- If you detect damage or defective equipment in the access card or burglar alarm installation, please notify Infocenter immediately.
- The University reserves the right to temporarily limit access to the University's premises.
FAQ's about the UMU card
How long is my UMU card valid?
As long as you are registered as a student at Umeå university, the card is updated automatically when you have been registered for your course. The same card will be used throughout your studies at Umeå University.
What do I do if I lose my UMU card?
You can block your card yourself in the UMU card self-service portal. If you want a new card, contact Infocenter. Infocenter can also help you unlock your blocked card if you find it again.
I have forgotten my pin code, how do I get a new one?
You can create a new pin code yourself in the UMU card self-service portal.
What do I have access to with my UMU card?
Depending on which course or education you take, you have access to different parts of the University's premises where you take your courses. You do not need to know this yourself, our system provides permissions automatically.
Do I need to return the card when I leave?
No, you do not have to return your UMU card. It will be deactivated automatically when you are no longer registered on a course at Umeå University.
I am an online student, do I need the UMU card?
If you do not need access to the University's premises during evenings and weekends, access to university printers or to borrow books from the library, you do not need an UMU card.
I am abroad, can I order an UMU card anyway?
No, you can only log into the UMU card portal when you are in Sweden.
