Bakterien Helicobacter pylori infekterar hälften av världens befolkning, varav 10–15 procent får magsår och 1–2 procent får magcancer. Utan behandling är H. pylori-infektionen livslång. Färre personer får magcancer i Sverige, men globalt är det den tredje vanligaste orsaken till död på grund av cancer.
