I research multiple languages' interactions in real-time speech processing at the sentence and discourse levels in Russian-English-Swedish and Swedish-English adults, using psycholinguistic methods.
Through my research, I aim to understand how multiple languages interact in one multilingual brain or mind. I do so, using psycholinguistic methods and analysing real-time speech processing. So far, I have mostly worked with behavioural data, but I have also collected the EEG data. The target groups I am currently interested in are adult Russian-English-Swedish and Swedish-English speakers. My previous study (https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-217738) used an online experiment containing the Visual World Paradigm and testing whether lexico-semantic sentence context (top-down information) could modulate bottom-up cross-linguistic interference from two non-target languages (L1-Russian and L2-English) in L3-Swedish. I have observed significant L1-Russian effects on L3-Swedish even though the participants had been L3-immersed for several years. In my new research project, I am planning to continue researching cross-linguistic interactions at the sentence or discourse level, possibly using the eye-tracking and/or EEG methods.
