Torulf Palm is a professor of educational work with a focus on formative assessment. He is the director of Umeå Mathematics Education Research Centre (UMERC) and research leader of a research group in formative assessment. He is also a licensed teacher. Palm's research focuses on formative assessment, motivation, mathematical reasoning and teacher education. A main focus is to increase the understanding of how important characteristics in teaching and learning practices affect motivation and learning, and what conditions teachers need to develop these characteristics. The research is conducted both as pure research projects and as combined research and school development projects in collaboration with teachers, schools and municipalities.
