Sophia will be studying ice-related sediment transport and bank erosion in Fennoscandian rivers. Ice plays a central role in shaping river channels in the northern hemisphere, and little is known about the geomorphic processes going on under ice. Together with her supervisor Dr. Lina Polvi Sjöberg, she will use a novel technique known as environmental seismology to obtain continuous data in two rivers and acquire a better understanding of how ice impacts channel form over the seasons, and what changes can be expected in the future due to climate change.
