The research in Matthew Francis lab seeks to understand mechanisms through which bacteria preserve biological function when exposed to toxic environments to ensure their continued growth and survival.
Biography
In 1990, Matthew Francis graduated from Adelaide University with an Honours degree of Bachelor of Science majoring in Microbiology, Genetics and Biochemistry. This was followed in 1997 with the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the subject bacterial pathogenesis.
During the period 1997 to 2001 he undertook postdoctoral research training at Umeå University. In 2002, he started his own independent research team at Umeå University with support from a Swedish Research Council junior investigator starting grant. In 2007 he gained tenure as an associate professor in prokaryotic molecular genetics at Umeå University, and has since been promoted to professor in 2016.
For several years Matthew Francis has been involved in undergraduate teaching within the areas of bacterial infection biology, genetics and gene expression. He is currently the director of undergraduate education at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University.
