I am a computer scientist (specializing in artificial intelligence and knowledge representation) who has worked in CS, information science, geomatic engineering, and geography. My work is and has always been interdisciplinary. It is firmly located at the intersection of AI, human-computer interaction, spatial cognition, and geographic information science. Accordingly, interests are broad and publications seem diverse, but they all address questions of adaptation (processes) in interaction, exploiting properties & characteristics of environments and context in decision making, identification (processes) of relevant information, and generally keeping the human in the loop while using assistance services.
In Umeå, I head the Spatial Cognitive Engineering group. The group explores aspects of interacting with autonomous systems (e.g., robots, or smart location-based services), and of human-in-the-loop decision making. Research includes the development of new methods and algorithms, the identification and structuring of concepts and knowledge required for interaction ("ontologies"), and empirical (human-subject) studies.
I am a co-chair of the working group "Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science" of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) Technical Committee 12 Artificial Intelligence.
Further, I am part of the department's management (assistant head of department), and director of studies for PhD education.
I mostly teach in the Cognitive Science program, both in the bachelor's and master's.
I am Computing Science's representative in the steering committee for the Cognitive Science program.
