Molecular microbiologist working in Felipe Cava lab, received an 'EC' postdoctoral fellowship to investigate bacterial cell wall biology.
Gabriel Torrens studied his BSc in Biological Sciences and MSc in Advanced Microbiology at the University of the Balearic Islands, Palma. After finishing his studies he started working in the field of antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity of bacterial infections at the University Hospital Son Espases, in Palma, Spain.
His PhD focused on cell wall recycling in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its relation with the β-lactamase expression and virulence, emphasizing the use of liquid chromatography techniques learned at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa in Madrid, as well as at the Umeå Microbial Research Center at Umeå University, Sweden.
He is currently working as an 'EC' postdoc in Felipe Cava lab on several projects including the study of lipid rafts in Staphylococcus aureus to inhibit MRSA antibiotic resistance. His interests focus on bacterial cell wall biology, infection biology, transcriptomics, development of new antimicrobial therapeutics and LC-MS approaches to understand antimicrobial resistance.
