We study disease mechanisms in the Puumala virus infection and COVID-19, in order to understand disease mechanisms and be able to develop future treatment.
Clas Ahlm who is a professor of infectious diseases, studies two important viral infections, COVID-19 and hantavirus infection. Both viral infections are transmitted via the lungs and can cause severe illness and even death, especially in the elderly and people with other concomitant chronic diseases.
Further knowledge is needed about both disease mechanisms and protective immunity, effective treatment and vaccine efficacy for COVID-19, and there is still a lack of treatment and vaccine against Puumala virus infection and other more serious viruses within the hantavirus group.
