Carolina Hawranek, researcher and project leader in lung cancer screening at RCC Norr, previously researched hereditary cancer and active in the DIRECT study.
Carolina Hawranek defended earned her PhD at the Medical faculty in February 2023. Her reserach focus is cancer prevention and risk communications. Her thesis compiled four years or reserach work on clinical practice of cancer risk management within clinical genetics and contributed to the understanding of hereditary cancer risk communication.
Her studies have explored how patients disclose genetic risk information to relatives, highlighting the emotional and practical challenges involved, and pinpointed necessary development areas in preventive cancer care. Key findings include the importance of personalized, case-specific information and the need for better support from healthcare professionals. Her work also emphasizes the value of targeted surveillance and preventive care for at-risk individuals.
Her background as a biomedicine major, science journalist and health communication specialist allows her to add a multiprofessional perspective to her projects and she enjoys collaborations across professional and organisational barriers.
