I am senior professor of occupational and environmental medicine. I have previously been a senior physician at Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the university hospital.
My research is on how our physical environment affects health, with a focus on factors in the work environment. As a physician, I have previously been associated with the hospital and investigated patients whose illnesses may be related to the environment. I am also interested in insurance medicine.
I am in the final phase of a project that studies how health affects work ability as you approach retirement age and how health is affected by work at these ages when you often also have chronic illnesses. I have also been interested in how to estimate work-related mortality and how it changes over time and importance of different factors. There are also projects studying the relationship between health and chronic diseases such as cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by e.g. dusts or asbestos.
I came to Umeå from Gothenburg as professor and chief physician in 1996. I have been the head and dean and since the end of 2014 I am a senior professor working part-time.
