The grants are made possible thanks to donations dedicated for Ukrainian students at Umeå University. All funds collected are used in their entirety to help students who are in Umeå and will be distributed twice a year. The size of the grants for each student for the fall semester 2022 will depend on the size of the donations that the university has received as of 1 September, 2022. The donations will be evenly allocated among all eligible applicants in relation to the number of credits of studies during the fall semester 2022. The grant can however not exceed 11500 SEK per month.
In June 2022, when the initiative was launched by the donation committee, Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson said "Our role as a university is to defend core academic values, the freedom of universities, research and higher education, to defend democratic discourse and critical thinking. This initiative is one way to contribute to that."
