Master's Programme in Physics

Welcome to Umeå University and the Department of Physics. You have been admitted to the Master’s Programme in Physics. As a student on the programme you are offered individual study counselling and can to a large extent choose courses according to your own interests and ambitions. The programme is finished of with an (at least) one-semester long master’s thesis.

How to start

  • 1. Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

  • 4. Programme start

To kick off the programme there will be an info meeting on Friday, August 30, 10:00–12:00 at Bottenhavet, Fysikhuset. To find this room, please follow the map: https://link.mazemap.com/wh64NsHh

During this meeting, you will receive some general information about studying on the programme, how to choose courses, where to find information, computer labs etc. The actual start of the studies depends on which courses you choose, but most courses will start on the week beginning on September 2.

The schedules to all master’s level courses of the first half of the first semester are found here:

About the programme

  • About the programme

The Master’s Programme in Physics is an international programme and is therefore given in English. The programme provides a lot of freedom, and you are allowed to choose very freely among the courses.

You can find all physics courses available here: https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-physics/education/courses/

However, the programme has four profiles that you can use as a starting point: Photonics, Computational Physics, Nanoscience and Advanced Materials, and Theoretical Physics.

Each of these paths has a suggested list of courses and a plan for when to study them. Most students choose to follow one of these paths with some modifications based on their own interests. It is also possible to include courses in related subjects e.g., radiation science, mathematics, and computer science. You can read more about the different profiles here: https://www.umu.se/en/student/my-studies/find-programme/masters-programme-in-physicss/programme-profiles/

More information about studying the programme can be found here: https://www.umu.se/en/student/my-studies/find-programme/masters-programme-in-physics/

There are large variations, but a typical 7.5 ECTS credits course includes about 18-20 two-hour lectures and 6 two-hour problem-solving sessions. The students are expected to do most of their studies on their own or together with other students in study groups. During most of the programme you will take two courses simultaneously with a 50% study pace for each course. With a few exceptions, the extent of the courses is one study period (half a semester). Typically, you will study 15 ECTS credits (two courses) each study period. The courses are normally finished off by a written examination. Many courses also include laboratory experiments, computer labs or other projects, for this, a written or oral report is required as part of the examination.

The programme is usually finished off with a one-semester long Master’s thesis, but you have the options to do up to a yearlong project. The thesis work is usually done in one of our research groups, but it is also possible to do it in a company or at another university, even abroad. The latter alternatives usually must be arranged by the students themselves.
