To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

The week before the lectures start you are invited to meet the programme directors Dr. Juan Carlos Nieves and Dr. Ola Ringdahl. They will give a brief introduction to the program and answer your questions.
This meeting will take place on August 30 at 11.00 in room MIT.A.216 in the MIT building at Umeå University or on Zoom if you are not able to attend in person.
During the first semester, you will take courses as outlined below. Typically, you will be studying two courses simultaneously. The courses are on campus.

Depending on which courses you took in your Bachelor’s programme, you must choose to take either logic or statistics in September:
• Foundations of Logic and Model Theory (If you already took a course in Mathematical Statistics)
• Statistics for Engineers (If you already took a course in Formal Logic)
If you have taken both logic and statistics before, please contact the programme directors to decide on a suitable alternative course.
During the second half of the semester, you will take different courses depending on which profile area you choose; the Data Science profile area (Mathematical Statistics) or one of the two profile areas within Computer Science (Social AI or Machine Learning).

You can choose between three different profile areas in the programme:

Additional details about the profile areas can be found in the programme syllabus. Most courses are elective, allowing you to choose based on your interests and selected profile area. For the first semester, you must decide whether to pursue the Data Science profile or one of the two Computer Science profiles.

CloseRecommended arrival times
International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.
If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

CloseAccess to Microsoft Office 365
Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
