WELCOME TO THE COURSE

Radiation Dosimetry

Congratulations! It is with great pleasure to inform that you have been admitted to the course Radiation Dosimetry at Umeå University. My name is Erik Nilsson and I'm the Course Advisor. On this page you will find important information that will be useful, so please read it carefully. If you have any questions, you can use the contact form below. We wish you a warm welcome and hope that you will enjoy your period of studies here in Umeå.

How to start

  • 1. Reply to your offer

Have you been admitted to a course or programme, but do not wish to keep your place? Then you should decline your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list.

    Support for students with disabilities

If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

I want to activate my user account and install MFA

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Course registration

You need to be registered for the course in the study documentation system to be able to follow the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
Online registration is open between 240925-241009.
To be able to sign in at the student website and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id account.

About the course

  • Programme/course information

The roll call at the first lecture is mandatory and it is important to notify the course coordinator if you can’t participate.

In this course we apply what we’ve learned from radiation interaction to determine, for instance, the energy deposited by ionizing radiation. This is of great importance for radiation protection and in radiotherapy when constructing dose plans. We start off with a recap of radiation interaction, how charged and uncharged particles interact with matter. We introduce quantities and concepts commonly used in radiation dosimetry and investigate how radiation can be detected and subsequently measured. We continue by studying differences between measurements and expected results, and explain how to derive corrections for the discrepancies. This course also contains an introduction to microdosimetry and internal dosimetry, both of which are important when determening the intentional and unintentional damage caused by ionizing radiation. The course contains three parts, where the theory (7.5ECTS) is examined at a written exam, the laboratory part (2.5ECTS) is examined via written laboratory reports and a project (5 ECTS). The project is a group assignment and is examined by oral presentations and written reports.

After completed course, the student is expected to:

    • In detail explain the dosimetric quantities and concepts on which radiation dosimetry is based
    • In details explain large cavities as well as Bragg-Gray, Spencer-Attix and Burlin cavity theory
    •  Explain ion chambers, chemical and solid-state detectors
    • Explain concepts and dose determination in internal dosimetry
    • Explain microdosimetry
    • Independently apply the expected knowledge to determine the absorbed dose, using correct dosimeter, experimental design, approximations and calculation methods
    • Show the ability to communicate and collaborate during group assignments
    • Independently plan, organize and implement work in project form
  • More information 1

All communication with the students during the course is via Canvas.

When you register for the course (see above), you will have access to the course information on Canvas.

It's important that you access this information, if you don't use your university mail account, it's important that you arrange for forwarding to another email address.

The course you are going to take is provided by the Department of Radiation Sciences

  • Recommended arrival times

International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).
