Writing a research proposal
A research proposal should have sufficient information to convince your readers that you have an important research idea, that you have a good understanding of the relevant literature and the major issues, and that you have applied a relevant method and theory to answer your questions. Normally, a research proposal should contain all the key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the readers to evaluate the proposed study.
All research proposals should address the following questions:
1. What do you plan to accomplish?
2. Why do you want to do it?
3. How are you going to do it?
At the beginning of the research process, it is helpful to frame the research topic and provide the necessary background and context for the research problem. Identify and refer to the most relevant and representative publications. Try to place your research question in the context of either a current "hot" area, or an older area that you can argue are in any way under-researched.
Secondly, you need to provide a brief but appropriate historical background.
Thirdly, conclude with an argument where your proposed research question is presented as relevant as possible. Your theoretical basis should be integrated in the argumentation.
The paper should be around 2-3 pages. A part of the challenge is to write short and efficient.
The major content of this course is to write an independent student thesis in Gender Studies. The objective is to carry out a study in gender studies and formulate relevant research questions that contributes to the fields of gender study empirically, methodologically and theoretically. Apart from the actual writing of a thesis the student is also expected to defend the thesis and to act as a discussant on another student’s thesis.
