In the course, different theoretical perspectives on leadership and leader development are in focus. A key feature is to analyse leadership practices by using team- and individual activities and sports in different age groups. The relationship between individual and group development is also examined within the context of outdoor education.
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
Skills and ability
Values and attitudes
Grundläggande behörighet. Undantag beviljas från krav på svenska om kursen ges på engelska.
The teaching is organised through lectures, seminars, group exercises and tutorials. The teaching activities are carried out, as a whole or partly, with support from information and communication technology (ICT), which demands specific technical equipment and skills. Compulsory modules are; outdoor activity and scheduled leadership tasks. The course will be given in English.
The student is examined through written, oral and practical elements. Examination will be made both continuously through the course and at the end of the course. The course is graded using three grades: Pass with distinction, Pass and Fail.
The course is examined through the following forms of examination:
To pass the course the student has to earn the grade pass on all the above examinations. To pass the course with distinction the student has to earn the grade Pass with distinction on the individual leadership task as well as the individual written assignment and have earned the grade Pass on all the other forms of examination. The course work is examined at an ordinary examination and a scheduled re-sit examination in close connection to the course. In general, a third examination opportunity is offered in the beginning of the next autumn semester. Participation in the third re-sit requires a notification to the study counsellor. Students who receive the grade Fail at the third examination are requested to assign to the examinations the next time the course is given. Re-examinations based on the same curriculum are guaranteed within two years after the first course registration. A student has the right to change examiner for a course based on a written request to the head of department after two failures in the same course or part of a course. If special reasons exist, the examiner has the right to decide on another form of examination.
The course work is examined at an ordinary examination and a scheduled re-sit examination. The first re-sit shall be offered no later than two months after the regular test, but not less than ten working days after the results of the regular test have been announced. For tests given during May and June, the first re-sit may be offered within three months of the regular examination session. At least one second re-sit shall be offered within a year of the regular examination session. Examination based on the same course syllabus as for the regular test is guaranteed for a maximum of two years from when the previous course syllabus has ceased to apply or the course has ceased to be offered. Regarding internship/placement, the corresponding rules apply with a limit of one re-sit. By written request to the head of department, a student has the right to change examiner for a course after two failed examinations in the same course or part of a course.
Transfer of credits
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
