Högre seminariet i filosofi bjuder in till gästföreläsning med Torfinn Huvenes, Bergen. Seminariet har den engelska titeln "Hedged, but not weak".
Abstract (på engelska):
Sometimes, you want to convey some information, but you are not sufficiently confident to make a flat-out assertion. In those case, you might hedge. Instead of saying “It’s raining in Bergen,” you might say something like “I think it’s raining in Bergen” or “It’s raining in Bergen, as far as I know.” This talk about is about how hedges differ from assertions and how different hedges differ from each other. For instance, is it correct to think of hedging as a way of weaking the speaker’s commitment? Is there is a difference in the force of the speech act when you say, “I think it’s raining in Bergen” and when you say, “It’s raining in Bergen, as far as I know”?
