Optimal strategies: strengthening learning, improving performance, and reducing dropout from higher education

Abstract Dropout from higher education is an increasing problem worldwide, where European dropout rates vary from 14.7% in Germany to 34.1% in Italy and up to 30% in Sweden. There are many different reasons behind failures and dropouts. It can be as simple as students’ lack interest or wrong expectations But, it can also be due to high study requirements, in combination with ineffective learning strategies, which lead to failures on exams and dropout. The use of active evidence-based learning strategies (also denoted as study techniques) is one key to meet high requirements. The presentation will focus on an research proposal aiming for an intervention that will changes to students’ learning strategies, and thus investigate if they maintain these strategies over time and whether this translates into better performance and reduced dropout rates
