Dario Rodighiero, Assistant Professor of Sciences and Technology Studies at the University of Groningen presents research aboutdigital methods and its use and impacton knowledge history.
The book "Mapping Affinities'' centers on a research mapping project at EPFL, which raises significant questions about research, organizational structures, and university governance. The book's subtitle, "Democratizing Data Visualization," emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach to mapping involving critical and creative data analysis, understanding visualization as an interactive tool, and accommodating different audiences and modes of engagement.
Traditional scientometric and bibliometric systems are limited in describing the shape and texture of a research community, its connections to other groups, and the balance between individual researchers and their laboratories. Instead, the author proposes networks based on affinity, rather than influence or formal collaboration, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of research communities and how they can be represented and transformed into objects of experience performed by the community.
The book's ultimate message is that successful mapping and visualization of complex communities, such as universities, require designers to enhance institutional data sets, shape data into meaningful experiences for multiple audiences, and deliver these experiences in multiple modalities. Data democratization is ultimately achieved by design, not just by transparent data analysis and dissemination.
