Play with purpose: games as tools for exploring complex problems
Social simulations are used to reproduce real-life settings in order to obtain a better understanding of the social world, often tackling complex problems like the effects of policy intervention, urban planning, climate adaptation or crisis management. However, the more complex a simulation becomes, the more difficult it is to communicate the inner workings and explain the results to stakeholders. However, there are plenty of games out there just as complex as any of our simulations, if not more, and they manage this communication perfectly well. As such, we believe (serious) games could provide an immersive, interactive environment for stakeholders to experiment, collaborate, and explore solutions to complex real-world problems without real-world risks. Built on top of simulations of real-life dynamics and constraints, these games could allow players to adopt diverse perspectives, test hypotheses, and understand the impact of their decisions. This talk will go over a couple of work-in-progress games our research group is currently developing, in particular the development of a new green neighborhood in Umeå. Your feedback is welcome, both during the talk and during the hands-on workshop afterwards.
