Post doctor (2 years) within cognitive neuroscience of aging – with focus on AI-based methods for neuroimaging
The Department of Medical and Translational Biology (MTB) at Umeå University announces a postdoctoral scholarship in cognitive neuroscience of aging. MTB offers an active and creative research and educational environment for both employees and students. More information about the department can be found on our website Department of Medical and Translational Biology (umu.se)

The scholarship holder will be part of Alireza Salami’s research group at the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM; https://www.umu.se/en/wallenberg-centre-for-molecular-medicine/) and the Umeå Center for Functional Brain Imaging (Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (umu.se)).  WCMM conducts research in various research arena including cancer, infectious diseases, and nervous system disease.

The scholarship is intended for full-time studies over two years with access April 1, 2025 or by agreement.

Project description
The project investigates neural and molecular basis of cognitive decline in aging using longitudinal data. Furthermore, we aim to use AI-based methods to predict post-synaptic markers of dopamine (D1-like receptors from D2-like receptors and vice versa) from each other. This project will use a unique longitudinal dataset from the DyNAMiC (and COBRA) projects with extensive MRI, PET, and cognitive test battery (http://www.alirezasalamilab.com/project1.html).

The incumbent is expected to contribute to all aspects of research, including analysis of brain imaging data, interpretation, and publication of results. The applicant should be able to integrate both independently and as part of the research group.

Qualifications
The post-doctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or another area closely related to the current project. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient. Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree before that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Furthermore, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with hands on experience with the latest MRI techniques as well as AI-based methods.

The applicant is required to:

  • Have experience in neuroimaging (particularly functional connectivity) and/or AI-based methods. The applicant with documentation of such an experience via a published paper(s) will be given priority.
  • Is capable in statistics and communication in written and spoken scientific English.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's suitability for the current project and ability to collaborate.

Application and conditions
The scholarship is valid for 2 years with funds through the Kempe Foundation. Applications must be submitted through our e-recruitment system Varbi and received no later than February 5, 2025. Your application can be written in English (preferably) or Swedish. The application should include:

  • A brief cover letter (about one page) describing the applicant's research experience, research interest and suitability for the project.
  • Curriculum vitae which includes degrees, positions, list of publications, as well as names and contact information for two references.
