The Department of Medical Biosciences is an internationally successful research environment with a translational focus in pathology, clinical chemistry, and medical and clinical genetics. The department belongs to the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University and has approximately 90 employees conducting research, clinical activities, and teaching. The department is located in the "Translational Research Centre," a research center at Umeå University in direct contact with Norrland University Hospital.

The Department of Medical Biosciences is seeking a postdoctoral fellowship in medical sciences with a focus on tumor biology and TGFbeta signal transduction. The fellowship is for full-time studies over two years, starting on May 1, 2025, or as agreed. The application deadline is April 5, 2025.

Project Description
The Landström Research Group, part of the Department of Medical Biosciences at Umeå University, is working within a dynamic and stimulating multidisciplinary research environment. Our research is focused on tumor biology, TGFbeta signal transduction, and cancer research, particularly in prostate and colorectal cancer. We use various biochemical, molecular biological, and tumor biological methods, as well as digital spatial transcriptomics, confocal and fluorescence microscopy. We conduct studies in preclinical tumor models and on clinical materials from humans and have close collaboration with physicians and researchers experienced in advanced molecular methods to investigate biomarkers in blood and tissue.

Our research so far has shown that TGFbeta signaling affects cancer cells' ability to proliferate, invade, and metastasize.

Qualifications
To be eligible for a postdoctoral fellowship, the candidate must have a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree in the field of molecular biology, tumor biology, or related areas at the time of recruitment. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time when the decision on the fellowship recipient is made. In the case of equal qualifications, candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline should be given preference. Additionally, a candidate who completed their degree earlier may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave, or clinical practice, union assignments, or similar circumstances.

Since the project requires interactions with colleagues from different backgrounds and national and international collaborators, excellent communication skills, both oral and written, in English are a must. The candidate is also expected to have the ability to work in a team, be highly motivated, and be able to structure their research independently. The applicant must have excellent knowledge of standard techniques in molecular biology, tumor biology, and biochemistry. It is advantageous to have demonstrated expertise in tumor biology, cancer research and signal transduction, preclinical tumor models in vivo/in vitro, DNA damage, and an interest in developing high-quality presentations in an accessible manner for a broad audience.

  • A resume/CV with information about education, a list of previous and current positions (max. 2 pages), and a list of scientific publications (max. 5 pages).
  • A verified copy of the doctoral degree certificate or documentation clarifying when the doctoral degree is expected to be obtained.
  • Contact information for two referees (email address, phone number with country code).
