Postdoctoral Fellowship (2 years) focusing on Bioinformatics and Microbiology

The Department of Odontology offers a postdoctoral scholarship within the project "Future directions in regenerative endodontics". The scholarship refers to full-time studies for two years with entry on 1 August 2024, or as agreed. The deadline for applications is 12 August 2024. The tax-free 2-year scholarship is financed by the Kempestiftelserna.

Project description

Dental trauma injuries during childhood and adolescence can have an adverse impact on oral health throughout life. When trauma injures the teeth, dental and neurovascular supply can be disrupted, and microorganisms may invade the pulp tissue, initiating infection. Regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) shows great promise in addressing the consequences of pulp inflammation and infection in young, immature teeth by utilizing dental stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) to restore damaged tooth structures.

The main goal of the present project is to develop the treatment of immature necrotic teeth in young individuals caused by dental trauma. As a postdoc, you will engage in the analysis of microbiome data to comprehensively investigate the microbiome present in traumatized teeth affected by infection. Additionally, you will examine metabolomic, transcriptomic, and cytokine expression profiles stimulated by apical papilla stem cells in reaction to prevalent oral pathogenic strains and microbiomes.

The scholarship project is financed by the Kempe foundation. The scholarship is for two years with a starting date as agreed. The scholarship amounts to 350 000 SEK per year (around 28 500 euro). The scholarship is not subject to tax.

Qualifications

You have a Ph.D. degree in Dentistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics or related fields at the time of recruitment. You should be highly motivated, have very good communication skills, both oral and written communication in English, and the ability to interact in a team and structure your research independently. Sincere enthusiasm for developing conference/seminar level presentations in an accessible manner to wide range of disciplines is a plus.

Experience with omics approaches (eg genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) and bioinformatics are required.

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate qualifies as a postdoctoral fellow. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances.

The scholarship is fully funded for 2 years but the candidate will also be encouraged to apply for their own grants.

Application

The application must contain:

  • Cover letter describing research experience, interests, and motivation
  • Curriculum Vitae - CV with publication list and technical skills
  • Degree certificate from doctoral education or documentation that makes it clear when the doctoral degree is expected to be obtained
  • Copies of other diplomas, academic course certificates and/or grades, diplomas or other documents
  • Contact information for two reference persons

Submit your application as a PDF marked with the reference number FS 2.1.6-1140-24, both in the file name and in the subject field of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se. The application can be written in English or Swedish. Application deadline is 12 August 2024.
