Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.
TL;DR HPC2N is one of Sweden's leading national supercomputing centers. We are looking for a dedicated system developer that wants to work with cutting edge technology and who can help us in making HPC and AI available to a broader community of researchers.
Deadline for applications is January 31 2025.
Description of work tasks The main work tasks primarily include system and service development in a DevOps inspired environment, but also includes operation, maintenance, and system development of systems and software used in HPC2N's and NAISS' operations. The work involves participation in local, national, and international projects.
The tasks include, in a DevOps inspired environment and in close collaboration with researchers, to develop and maintain new system and services to be able to efficiently use HPC2N's computer resources, such as high-performance parallel computer systems and networks, large-scale disk, and tape storage systems. The tasks also include development of services for sensitive data. User support is an important part of the work. The tasks may also include project management and coordination of work in various projects and activities at local and national level.
We primarily work with Linux (Ubuntu, RedHat and derivatives of these), but other operating systems also occur.
Keywords in what we do: Linux (Ubuntu, RedHat and derivatives thereof), GPU’s, HPC, Batch system (SLURM), containers (Apptainer, Docker), parallel filesystems (Lustre), dCache, security systems (Kerberos, SSH), Ansible, Puppet, Easybuild, Git, monitoring (Icinga, Grafana, Promethues, Victoria Metrics), databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB), Shell script, Python, Django, Perl and other programming languages such as C, C++, Java, etc.
Qualifications University education with a focus on computer science or experience and competence that can be assessed as equivalent. A Master's degree in technical computer science with a focus on parallel computing is advantageous.
Knowledge and experience of scientific computing and cloud environments is a requirement, which includes documented experience in several of the following areas:
Working in DevOps environments
Virtualization and container environments in Linux
Scripting languages: Python, shell script, Perl
Operation of larger distributed and parallel systems in a Linux environment (Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat, Rocky)
Automation of recurring tasks
Supervision and monitoring of complex heterogeneous computer environments
User support and advanced user support
Documented experience in DevOps environments, system development and system operations. Experience programming in Python is a requirement. Experience in working with sensitive data is advantageous. Experience from operation of parallel computer systems and queuing systems is advantageous. Experience with various web frameworks for Python (especially Django) is advantageous.
Most of the work will take place in an international environment, and as part of national and international collaborations, which is why it is a requirement to be able to express oneself well in English, both in speech and in writing.
High demands are placed on being able to plan, organize, document and follow up one's work independently, but also on cooperation and on the ability to communicate with colleagues and users.
Application Your application must be written in Swedish or English and should contain:
A cover letter, max 2 A4 pages, that motivates your interest in this position and that explains why you are the person to be hired. The letter should also include a discussion of your experience and your view of system administration.
A curriculum vitae
Contact information of at least two reference persons (no reference letters are required)
Documentation of formal qualifications (diplomas, course transcripts, course certificates, etc.)
Documentation of former positions, relevant experiences and other qualifications
References (links) to publicly available development projects and repositories you have been part of.
Should the submitted material be in a language different from Swedish or English, an English translation must be included too.
Terms of employment This is a full-time, permanent position, and a probationary period may be applied. Start date as per agreement.
Information More information about the position can be given by HPC2N director Paolo Bientinesi, tel +46 720 856 180, pauldj@cs.umu.se
HPC2N High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) is one of Sweden's leading supercomputing centers, and member of NAISS (National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden). HPC2N is hosted by Umeå University and has a partnership with the Institute of Space Physics, Luleå University, Mid Sweden University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Umeå University.
HPC2N is operating high-performance parallel computer systems and networks, large-scale disk and tape storage systems. All levels of user support are offered, to make sure researchers can make use of our resources in the best possible way.
HPC2N’s main compute resource, Kebnekaise, is continuously undergoing a process of renovation, with new CPU:s and GPU:s to meet the need of our users. At the same time, we are striving to make Kebnekaise more user-friendly to new users of HPC and AI.
Umeå University wants to offer an equal environment where open dialogue between people with different backgrounds and perspectives lay the foundation for learning, creativity and development. We welcome people with different backgrounds and experiences to apply for the current employment.
We kindly decline offers of recruitment and advertising help.
