Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics seeks a staff scientist who will work with a research group investigating the evolution of microbial endosymbioses. This is a temporary full-time employment for the time period 2025-01-01 to 2025-12-27. Apply latest 25 November 2024.
Work description You will work within the Libby research group, based at IceLab and the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University. The group conducts research on microbial ecology and evolution on topics concerning the evolution of complexity. One particular topic of interest is the origin and establishment of microbial endosymbioses. Such a microbial endosymbiosis led to the evolution of eukaryotes and all large complex organisms.
Your work will involve deepening the understanding of microbial endosymbioses by focusing on the role of genetic exchange between host and guest. This includes using mathematical models and metabolic models to study the evolution and dynamics of these microbial interactions.
Qualifications You have a PhD degree in computational science, evolutionary biology, or equivalent. We require a record of productive interdisciplinary research in mathematical evolutionary biology, experience with microbial metabolic modeling, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Solid verbal and written English communication skills are required.
