  • Type of employment Special fixed-term employment
  • Extent 100%
  • Place Umeå

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The position is full-time (100%) for 12 months and is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

Project description and working tasks

Non-additive measures are defined functions where the additivity condition is replaced by monotonicity with respect to set inclusion. An example of this type of measure is outer measures. These measures are also called capacities, fuzzy measures, and monotone games, and are used to represent interactions between elements. They have applications in mathematical economics, social choice, and computer science.

The research group Nausica (led by Prof. Vicenç Torra) has extensive experience in the field and works with non-additive measures for both discrete and continuous domains. Our current research includes theoretical results on non-additive measures and integrals, numerical integration with non-additive measures, Radon-Nikodym-like derivatives, optimal transport problems, and distances for these measures (f-divergence-like and Wasserstein-like), probability distributions based on these measures. We have developed applications for decision modeling and data privacy as well as methods for measure identification. We are also interested in differential equations involving non-additive measures and time scale calculus. The group collaborates with several national and international research groups in these subjects (Japan, USA), and has active contacts with the private and public sectors. The position is funded by The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), which is Sweden’s largest individual research program. The program creates a platform for academic research and education in close collaboration with leading Swedish technology-intensive industry. WASP’s research includes artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that operate in collaboration with humans and adapt to their environment using sensors, information, and knowledge, creating intelligent systems of systems. WASP’s vision is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/
