Várdduo belongs to the Faculty of Arts, yet with a mission to work across the university´s different faculties, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, as well as other national and international partners.
The mission statement of Várdduo - Centre for Sámi Research includes:
work university-wide to coordinate and expand Sámi and Indigenous research;
conduct and develop research relating to Sámi and Indigenous peoples', this is to be done within Várdduo and/or in collaboration with other departments;
develop education relating to Sámi and Indigenous peoples, this is to be done within Várdduo or in collaboration with departments, faculties and the Umeå School of Education;
support networks for doctoral researchers with projects within Sámi and Indigenous research;
contribute to dynamic scientific conversations on topics relating to Sámi and Indigenous peoples, this will partly be done through seminar series;
collaborate with authorities, organisations, civil society and representatives from Sámi societies;
contribute to Indigenous-related internationalisation at Umeå University;
carry out any assignments delegated to Várdduo after decision by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
