Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) is available to everyone at Umeå University and supports increased exchange, collaboration and co-operation between various research domains focusing on sustainability research. We also welcome new collaborations with other universities and external stakeholders in the sustainability field.

All of us who were part of founding UTRI have long yearned for a cross-disciplinary platform for collaboration. Umeå University has strong and dynamic research about sustainability, climate, environment and many related perspectives.
But despite sustainability being a core part of Umeå University’s vision, no funding or forums to meet and develop ideas around sustainability were available before UTRI was founded. The goal of UTRI is to bring together various disciplinary perspectives, people and research groups that would not meet otherwise.

It has become increasingly important that research environments, research exchanges and collaboration involve many established groups, disciplines and faculties. This is why a forum supporting pioneering and strong interdisciplinary research is needed.
Despite the many strong research environments at Umeå University, no forum has been available in which researchers can gather around funding calls, in which ideas are born in new constellations and events, and in which workshops give kindling to new ideas and results.
Umeå University’s research on sustainability issues has not been unified or communicated clearly, neither between the various groups working with sustainability and transformation within the University, nor externally to funding bodies or other research environments.
The UTRI research network is an important part of creating an extensive research environment for sustainable transition at Umeå University by offering the platforms for commitment, interaction, influence, visibility and facilitation of ideas.
Here you will find a list of events that UTRI has been involved in.
