Introducing a ‘Third’ Urban Layer: A utopian approach to loss of mycorrhiza
Master’s Degree Project
2023
Cities are experiencing a loss in the mycorrhizal network underneath & around our built environment, this network is a secondary root network that expands the absorbing capacity of primary roots in soil up to a 1000 times and enables roots to communicate and share nutrients. This loss of mycelium is visible underneath the microscope, but is still rather unknown. Through different forms of utopian ‘paper architecture’ the problem can make an entrance into the ‘designed’ world to then inspire real solutions.
