PhD Programme in Architecture

The PhD programme in Architecture at Umeå University aims to educate architectural scholars who are experts in their research areas and adept at addressing the complex intersections of architecture, urbanism, landscape, and technology from both theoretical and practice perspectives within diverse cultural, social, and political contexts.

The PhD programme in Architecture at Umeå University is oriented towards the training of scholars in the study of architecture and urban design through technical and natural scientific research and practice, as well as the more artistic research tradition. This comprehensive approach allows students to explore a wide range of perspectives and methodologies, emphasizing the significant impact that architecture has on human and non-human social interactions and experiences.

At Umeå School of Architecture, we foster an environment that encourages holistic, forward-thinking, and inclusive approaches to architectural research. PhD candidates are trained to independently advance their research and collaborate on projects that influence environmental, technical, societal, and aesthetic aspects of the built environment.

Education

The PhD programme in Architecture comprises 240 ECTS credits, equivalent to four years of full-time study. However, many PhD students dedicate 80% of their time to their research and 20% to teaching or departmental responsibilities, extending their studies to five years. Throughout the programme, PhD students are employed by Umeå University and do not pay any tuition fees.

The PhD programme ensures a high standard of research education through regular supervision and an individual study plan, collaboratively developed by the student, supervisors, and an examiner. Students participate in panel discussions and research seminars, where they can share their work and engage in scholarly dialogue with faculty and international experts. These events are essential for deepening students' research and broadening their academic networks.

PhD students have dedicated workspaces at UMA and are fully integrated into the department’s research activities. Each student is supported by a main supervisor from UMA and a secondary supervisor, ensuring comprehensive guidance throughout their doctoral journey. International scholars are also invited to contribute as guest lecturers and critics, enriching the academic discourse at the department and providing PhD students with valuable global perspectives.
