Umeå Marine Sciences Centre offers laboratory facilities for both research and teaching. The field station is located by the sea, and there is access to boats, sampling equipment and advanced equipment for chemical and biological analysis.

When renting a lab space, you will have access to laboratory material, common equipment, refrigerators, freezers, experiment halls, thermal constant rooms and sea water.
The teaching laboratory may be rented for shorter or longer periods. There is room for 16 students. Each laboratory space is equipped with electricity, water, gas and oxygen.
Before starting your laboratory work at UMF, please read UMF's general safety regulations for laboratory work.
You are obliged to assess the risks linked to your laboratory work. Contact the UMF staff before starting your work.
All samples, solutions, glass ware and equipment placed in the laboratories or in the storage rooms must be labelled with name, content and date. Unlabelled samples are discarded immediately. If you wish to store samples in refrigerators or freezers, please contact the UMF staff.
There are two available climate rooms where the temperature can be set between 5 and 15° C. The climate rooms must be reserved separately.
Fume hoods or benches are available in all laboratories. The fume hoods are equipped with low flow alarms. The airflow is affected by the position of the hood cabinet. Do not forget to close the door of the fume hood after finishing your work.
In the acid wash room there is a cupboard for storing acid bottles. Label the bottles clearly with your name. Close the door after finishing your work.
Protective coats are not provided by UMF.
Toxic substances and hazardous waste
Card board boxes with scint-vials are thrown into a special container for hazardous waste.
Containers with leftover isotopes other than 14C or 3H are placed on a specific shelve in the cupboard in Isotoplab 1.
Plastic gloves, Kleenex, etc. are not considered as radioactive waste.
Handling of gas bottles
For safety reasons, gas bottles are stored in a specific place at UMF. Inform UMF staff when you need to use a gas-bottle. Specify the period that you will be using it. We try to have as few gas bottles as possible in use in the laboratories.If possible, return the bottle at the end of each day.
Place empty bottles in the storage room. Label the empty bottle with one of the specific signs that says "Tom (=empty). You will find the signs in the storage room.
Safety - for the sake of us all
Be sure that you are able to answer the following questions before you start your work at the UMF laboratories:
Where is the nearest eye wash?
Where is the nearest emergency shower?
Where is the nearest fire extinguisher or fireproof blanket?
Where is the nearest first aid kit?
Where can I find the phone numbers to ambulance, fire department, poison information and health consultant?
Where is the nearest box with clean up material for chemical spill?
Where is the nearest emergency exit?
Am I informed about the risks with the chemicals I use and possible risks in the procedures in which those chemicals are employed?
Do I know where to go in case of an evacuation of the whole workplace?
When you have finished...
Empty the refrigerator and freezer. Do not leave leftovers.
Put all the dishes in the dish washing room.
Wipe the tabletop with alcohol,
Return passage cards and keys.
NOTE! If chemicals or other material are left when the course/your work is completed a cleaning fee will be charged.
