Ice-resistant free-floating mesocosms

The mesocosms are used for ecological and toxicological experiments in harsh and icy conditions.

The ice-resistant water bag is made of polyurethane. The diameter is 2 meters, and the water column 3 meters deep. It is possible to use deeper water bags for summer experiments.

Annual experiments focusing on issues related to climate change and its effects on the marine ecosystem in the subarctic environment are conducted at UMF. Research groups from Umeå University as well as other universities are welcome to participate in these experiments.

The 12 free-flowing mesocosms can also be booked for research purposes and are then transported dismantled and packed in containers. The user is then responsible for transport costs, costs for damages and other expenses that may arise in connection with use. Anchor and mooring materials, buoy beacons and sacrificial anodes are not included in the loan. In some cases, it may be possible to hire staff for the assembly and launch of the mesocosms.
