Changan Traveler

The possibility of autonomous driving and ride sharing will radially change how motor vehicle transportation evolves. The automobile will be liberated from its more one-dimensional function as a motorized source to simply move passengers from one location to the next. Instead it can address many user preferences, functioning during the ride as a place for work, relaxation, even entertainment. Defining new user desires and transforming these into an arresting design language was the motivation for this project. The thesis focused on pinpointing users who are especially interested in individualized premium comfort, safety and convenience. Finding an advanced design for the exterior of such a vehicle was the major inspiration.

The thesis project took place as a co-operation with the exterior design department of the automobile company Changan. Changan produces almost exclusively passenger vehicles for the Asian market. Creating a vehicle which expands upon the Changan portfolio was a goal of the project. Initial research helped define a new user group which influenced the nature of the design. Classical hand drawings together with 3D software models were tools implemented in the design process.The work procedure was not linear, but took on a laborious path which involved doubling back on and reworking many of the different creative attempts until finally culminating in an end product.

The Changan Traveler is the end result of the thesis project. It is a shared auto service for two for 2050 and a unique expansion on Changan´s historical production of passenger vehicles. The automobile is conceived as a two-compartment passenger transportation option. Its size allows for different rider experiences: work, relaxation and entertainment while on the go. Because the passenger is in his/her own "room" there is a guaranty for complete privacy and ultimate safety from outside influence.The uniquely sculptural design of the Traveler combines the sleek lower slung body of a sports car combined with the comfortable dimensions of a premium passenger vehicle. The physically prominent wing like architectural affect of the heck construction clearly shows the advanced design style of the Traveler.
