This course is aimed at students with an established ability to sketch. The course builds on Life Drawing 1 and aims to give the student additional tools to - with objectivity and certainty - observe and transfer the whole body, proportions and structure to the paper - and to be able to make quick choices in which elements are essential in the design of a human body . Throughout, the course connects to examples from art history and incorporates elements from different Life Drawing methods.
The course is divided in to three modules:
- Direction and balance 2,5 credits
- Character and expression 2,5 credits
- Movement 2,5 credits
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- Explain and understand the basic anatomical conditions in the human body that are relevant to its design
Competence and skills
- Show skills in drawing according to a living model
- Apply different techniques and approaches in Life Drawing
Judgement and approach
- Analyse different techniques and approaches and its effects on the image.
- Reason about image composition in relation to Life Drawing.
Required Knowledge
For admission to the course, besides basic eligibility, course 5ID180 Life drawing, 7.5 credits or equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
Form of instruction
The teaching is conducted mainly through practical exercises and group tutoring, with shorter presentations in connection with the various moments.
The course is given in Swedish, but if there are English-speaking students, tutoring can take place in English. If the majority of the students are English-speaking, the course is given in English with the possibility of tutoring in Swedish.
Examination modes
The examination is based on the student's active participation in seminars and practical exercises during the course, as well as through the submission of assignments.
Each module is examined by the students showing selected drawings from the module's elements, and participating in a critical discourse in groups and with teachers based on the drawings.
On each of the three modules and for the course as a whole, one of the grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) is given. To be approved for the whole course, it is required that all exercises and compulsory parts are approved.
Examiners may decide to deviate from the modes of assessment in the course syllabus. Individual adaption of modes of assessment must give due consideration to the student's needs. The adaption of modes of assessment must remain within the framework of the intended learning outcomes in the course syllabus. Students who require an adapted examination must submit a request to the department holding the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on the adaption of the examination, after which the student will be notified
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
