Student collaborations

A main feature of the educational programmes offered at UID is the close collaboration with industrial partners, civil actors and research institutions, including major companies such as; Volvo Group, Volkswagen, Spotify, Google, Microsoft, Ericsson, Nokia, Philips and IKEA.

Since its inception in 1989, Umeå Institute of Design has cooperated with over 100 companies; including small and medium-size enterprises as well as major multinational corporations. Some 30-40 collaborative projects are carried out each year, either as term projects or as individual examination work.

A major feature of all educational programmes at UID is the close cooperation carried out with stakeholders in a local, national and international setting.

Student project collaboration also takes place with the UID research department, strengthening the relationship between our educational programmes and the applied research taking place at UID.

Student projects are conceptual and visionary by nature

Typically, student projects look towards future horizons of five to fifteen years. Most collaborations are conceptual in nature, covering the early stages of product development. The key objective is to stimulate students' artistic freedom, innovative ability and creative ambitions.
