Trees growing low, branches turned inward toward their own trunks. My back has the same curve.
It was your hand I held
You showed which parts of the cliffs were unreliable
and could give way under my chubby heels
Barefoot together
We compared soles
You looked proud when mine hardened
Thought that maybe, with time, I could start to resemble you
You have the landscape etched into your skin
Salt from the sea seeped into the marrow
Forming calluses
Soft pink somewhere beneath
What is it like to get stuck
as you have?
Cracks
Perhaps love
When did it become so hard?
Tell me
Like you told me of dusk and barrenness
Suddenly
the wind has died down
How do you know if it's over?
