Here's how to make a complaint or to leave feedback regarding your education or study environment.
Complaints can relate to grading, treatment, supervision, quality of education, processing times and the like. One starting point when having a complaint is that it should primarily be handled and resolved as close to its source as possible to enable the university to quickly correct mistakes and/or mishandling or to clear up misunderstandings.
How to
If you wish to express comments regarding the course or programme, without receiving individual feedback, you can submit comments via the anonymous course and programme evaluations that are regularly carried out within the respective course and programme.
If you want to leave comments and get a individual answer, it is initially good to find out what applies - what rights and obligations both you as a student and the university have. The syllabus or program syllabus describes what applies to your current education. You can find the plan yourself via find the syllabus.
Umeå University's regulations regarding, for example, education issues, work environment issues, student support can be found here. Students can also contact their student union for support or guidance.
Always start by seeking a solution with the person concerned. This usually means that you contact your teacher at the programme, but it can also be a person who has an overall responsibility, such as course coordinator, programme coordinator, study counsellor or director of studies.
If you do not know who to contact, you can write your question or feedback in the university's contact form, which can be found in the footer on the university's web. You can also visit the Infocenter in Universumhuset and you will get help.
If you are not satisfied
If you are not satisfied with the solution offered, you can make a letter outlining your case and what you want to happen and send to registrator@umu.se. It will then be a registered case that gets a designated administrator.
There are decisions that can be appealed to a The Higher Education Appeals Board. See what applies here
The student who is still not satisfied with the university's management can turn to one of the university's supervisory authorities. See in particular the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) and the Parliamentary Ombudsmen (JO).
The Student Union can help you
You can always contact your student union for support and help with your complaint case. The student unions at Umeå University represent students within their respective responsibilities. There are, among other things, student representatives and student work environment representatives to support all students, including those who are not members of the student union.
