Exchange studies in a Nordic or Baltic country

Within the Nordlys/Nordplus exchange program, you can study or do an internship in another Nordic or Baltic country.

Application for exchange studies via Nordlys/Nordplus

The application period for the Nordlys exchange programme for the academic year 2025/2026 preliminary opens on 1 February and closes on 1 March. 

The last day to apply for exchange studies in the Nordic or Baltic countries via your department varies, but often takes place between January and March.

Within Nordplus, you can study or do an internship in another Nordic or Baltic country for a period of 1–12 months. Opportunity to apply for scholarships and travel grants is available. If you can only study abroad for a shorter period, there is the possibility of a shorter exchange, from 5 working days up to one month, through so-called express mobility.

Where can you go?

Nordplus includes universities in Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Exchange through your department (Nordplus)

To find out if your department has an agreement in a country or with a specific university where you want to go, contact the international contact person at your department. You can also search in Solemove (see below).

Exchange via the university-wide places (Nordlys)

If it is not possible to go on exchange via your department, you can apply for a place via the university-wide network Nordlys. You can find which universities are included on Nordlys website. You can also search in Solemove.

Follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Solemove.
  2. Select "Advanced search".
  3. Under "Your home unit", select your department to see their exchange agreements. Select "International office" to see the university-wide agreements.
  4. Under "Exchange program", select Nordplus. Click "search".

Eligibility

To be eligible for Nordlys, you must:

  • study at undergraduate or advanced level.
  • have completed at least one year of your education at Umeå University before departure (the exception is students studying in a joint master's program).
  • have completed at least 15 credits (hp) at Umeå University when you send in your application to the International Office.
  • stay at the place of study during the exchange period.
  • fulfill language requirements, please see this webpage for more information.

Please note that your department may have other eligibility rules.

Scholarship

During your stay abroad, you can keep your study grant (from CSN) and also have the opportunity to apply for the Nordplus scholarship plus a sum for travel expenses. The size of the travel allowance varies depending on which country you are going to.

Extra funds for students with disabilities

You who due to disability need special support to be able to participate in the exchange can get extra funds to cover the costs for it. Contact your coordinator for students with disabilities at Umeå University for more information and help.

Application to a university with which your department has an agreement

If you want to apply for an exchange place that your department has, you must contact the international contact person at your department to find out more about how the application goes and when the last application date is.

Application to a university-wide exchange place (Nordlys)

If your department is not in a Nordplus network, nor have their own agreement with the university that you are interested in, you can apply for an exchange place through the interdisciplinary network Nordlys. The Nordlys network is open to all students of Umeå University.

Submit your application through Solemove

Mandatory enclosure required with your application:

  • Study plan. Please write four courses for each university you are interested in applying to. Present your course selection to your study counselor. Note that the course selection is preliminary, nominated students may need to make new courses in a later application to the host university. Use this template

To be eligible for Nordlys, you must:

  • be a registered student at Umeå University
  • have a study performance over 75% at Umeå University, i.e. no more than 25% unfinished courses.
  • study at undergraduate or advanced level.
  • have completed at least one year of your education at Umeå University before departure (the exception is students studying in a joint master's program).
  • stay at the place of study during the exchange period.
