Campus: The university has two campuses; its main campus is located in Sapporo and the second one is in Hakodate.
Student life: There are more than 250 student clubs and associations to engage in, encompassing several areas of interest: sports, traditional Japanese culture, music, dance and recreation. The university also has its own museum and arranges festivals.

Hokkaido University was ranked no.22 in the world and no.7 in Japan by the QS World University Rankings 2018. In 2015, Reuters included the organisation in the world's top 100 most innovative universities.

About Sapporo

Sapporo is the third largest city in Japan in terms of area and the fifth largest in terms of population, with a population of almost 2 million people. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido Island and is described as a modern city. The climate is similar to the climate in Sweden - warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Every year, the Sapporo Snow Festival is arranged, attracting over 2 million visitors.

Please note that at Hokkaido University, there are different programmes that exchange students can apply for. They are: HUSTEP, JLCSP, SA and SRS.

Restrictions

Restricted subjects: School of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Dental Medicine.

Students need to have studied 2 years at an undergraduate level in order to apply to HUSTEP.

Course levels:
2000: undergraduate level class (basic)
3000: undergraduate level class (advanced)
5000: graduate level class (basic)
6000: graduate level class (advanced).

Additional costs

As an exchange student, you do not need to pay tuition fees. However, additional costs may incur.

An English test is required to study at Hokkaido University. TOEFL, IELTS and CEFR are accepted (HUSTEP).

University dormitories are guaranteed to exchange students, with both on and off-campus dormitories. Room assignment is decided by Hokkaido University.

Student grants and loans for studies outside of Sweden

You may be entitled to student grants and loans from CSN when studying abroad.

As the cost of living and accommodation may be higher abroad, you can apply for an extra loan known as an additional loan for studies abroad.

You can also apply for an additional loan to cover additional costs, i.e. travel and insurance costs.
