Notification of selection results and welcome letter
How do I reply to my Notification of selection results?
Second application round
If you have applied to Umeå University for studies with the application deadlines 15 April or 15 October, you must reply to your Notification of selection results on the University Admissions website to keep your place on the course or programme.
- Log in to "My pages".
- Go to "Applications", and follow the instructions.
- You should click the "Yes" box for the alternatives that you would like to keep and "No" for the ones you do not wish to keep.
If you see "Conditionally admitted" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you have a condition to fulfill before becoming eligible. More information can be found on the University Admissions website.
If you see " Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you have been placed on a waiting list for that course or programme.
First application round
If you are an exchange student, or have applied for studies with the application deadlines 15 January or 15 August, you do not need to reply to your Notification of selection results if you have been admitted.
If, however, you decide not to attend the course or programme to which you have been offered a place, please be sure to decline your offer.
- Log into your account at "My pages" on the University Admissions website.
- Go to "Applications" and follow the instructions.
- You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.
It is important to decline your offer as soon as you know you will not be attending. This makes the place available for students on the waiting list.
If you see "Conditionally admitted" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you have a condition to fulfill before becoming eligible. More information can be found at the University Admissions webpage.
If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you have been placed on a waiting list for that course or programme.
On the University Admissions website, you can find more information about the different Admissions results.

Social activities
What is "mottagning", "inspark", "nollning", "nolle-p", "phösare"?
Traditionally, many study programmes arrange a reception programme that goes under many different names, like "mottagning", "inspark", "nolle-p" or "phösare". The students having studied a year or more at the programme are the ones arranging the reception, normally as a part of the student unions. The purpose of the reception is team building, getting to know each other and to have fun together. If your programme carries the tradition of arranging a reception, you will get more information about it during your first week.
"Reserve" – placed on a waiting list, and late applications
In my Notification of selection results, it says "Reserve" next to the course or programme. What does this mean?
If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you have been placed on a waiting list for that course or programme. If a place becomes available, the responsible department will contact you directly.
What are my chances of being admitted when I am placed on the waiting list after the first Notification of selection results?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to say what your chances are to be admitted when you are placed on the waiting list. The possibility of a place becoming available differs greatly between courses and programmes. This means that for some courses and programmes the chances to get admitted are good, and for others it is less likely. You will need to wait and see the result when the second Notification of selection results is published.
In order to remain on the waiting list for a course or programme, you need to accept the reserve offer in the first Notification of selection results.
I am still on the waiting list after the second Notification of selection results. Might I be admitted?
If vacancies appear on the course or programme after it has started, you may be admitted. If so, you will be contacted by the department responsible for the course or programme. Students will be offered admittance to the course or programme in order by the waiting list.
How do I apply for deferment of studies?
If you are admitted to a course or a programme and have a valid reason to why you are not able to begin your studies, you can apply for a deferment. To apply for a deferment means that you are applying to postpone the start of your studies until another semester when the course or programme is offered.
To be granted a deferment, you will need to have a valid reason (e.g. social or medical). Examples of valid reasons include the care of children under one year of age, military or civic service, student union assignments or that your employer has denied or postponed your application for leave for studies.
Deferment is granted for up to a maximum of 18 months. An application for a deferment with the start of studies must, together with a certificate proving the reasons, be sent to the Student Services Office at Umeå University by email to antagning@adm.umu.se before the education begins, or as soon as possible.
If you send the application with a certificate via email, all attached files must be submitted as PDF-files. You can appeal a deferment decision.

Can I apply for a course or programme after the application deadline has passed?
If the course or programme still has an "Add" next to it when you search for it on the University Admissions website, you can register a late application.
For exchange students: Your course proposal will be fixed and binding so it is important to choose courses carefully. We have no add or drop period and course changes after the deadline are only allowed in very specific cases (for example if you have a schedule conflict). If you need to change courses, you must contact the International Office.
I forgot to reply to my Notification of selection results; what do I do?
If you have forgotten to reply to your Notification of selection results, you must reapply in order to get a chance to be readmitted. You can reapply for a programme if it still has an "Add" next to it when you search for it on the University Admissions website. Please note that when you reapply, your application will be considered late. In the case of a late application, the merit rating is based on the day on which the late application was received and not on your upper-secondary high school qualifications or academic qualifications.
Can I appeal a decision that I do not fulfil the qualifications for a course or programme?
Please note that it is always possible to first contact the Admissions Office at Umeå University through Infocenter for a new assessment of your application. You may appeal decisions made on your Notification of selection results regarding whether you meet the general and specific entry requirements for a specific course or programme.
Find out more about what admissions decisions you can or cannot appeal, and how to appeal, in the section “Appeals” on the University Admissions website. Please note that it is always possible to first contact the Admissions Office at Umeå University through Infocenter for a new assessment of your application. You can only submit an appeal after you have read your admissions notification.
