In my research I focus on religious policy, religious conflict and religious dialogue in Northern Eurasia. I have followed two main themes: Soviet attitudes towards, and measures against, traditional world views and rituals among the indigenous peoples of the North; and the relations between Christianity and indigenous Sami religion in Scandinavia, both in history and in the present. In addition, I have discussed fundamental theoretical questions for the study of religion, such as source critical issues and category formation in the academic study of religion. Beyond my own publications I have been co-editor of several scientific anthologies. I am also the editorial secretary of the inter- and multidisciplinary Journal of Northern Studies (www.jns.org.umu.se), published by Umeå University and the Royal Skyttean Society since 2007.
