Postdoc in Ellen Bushell's group. Research: elucidating the roles of secreted proteins in P. berghei infections and developing technologies for studying essential proteins in the malaria parasite.
Monique obtained her PhD from Cambridge University, UK working on DNA replication and cell cycle control in Plasmodium falciparum with Professor Catherine Merrick and Toxoplasma gondii with Dr Ross Waller. She investigated the differences between these apicomplexan parasites in the way they control their cell cycles and their responses to DNA damage.
After completing her PhD she joined Ellen Bushell lab and began investigating the essential secretome in Plasmodium berghei. She is adapting genome-wide knockout screens to target these essential secreted proteins in a conditional and scalable way. P. berghei is a well-established murine model for studying host-parasite interactions in vivo and she is exploring the critical roles of these secreted proteins through conditional knockdown methods. Ultimately hoping to improve the selection of new targets to combat malaria infections.
