Associate Professor in Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine
Associate Dean for Cooperation in Clinical Research and Education
Chair of the Proficiency test for International Medical Graduates
I am a senior lecturer and associate professor in anaesthesia and intensive care with a combined position as a consultant at Norrlands University Hospital. Additionally, I am the Associate Dean for Collaboration on Clinical Research and Education at the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.
Some major projects I am working on include:
On the research side, I am actively working to build networks between anaesthesia and intensive care units in the north. The clinical studies I particularly want to highlight are:
I realise that I have been in the academic world for a long time, even though it feels like it was just recently that I defended my thesis on chylomicron metabolism at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics in Umeå. That was in 1995. Since then, I have completed my medical education, done my internship and residency in Umeå, and spent four years as a registrar at Lycksele Hospital, enjoying the adrenaline rushes as an ambulance helicopter doctor, before becoming a senior lecturer for Umeå University at Sunderby Hospital in 2011. The work brought me back to Umeå in 2018. A fantastic journey!
Ever since my doctoral studies (1989-1995), I have been deeply engaged in teaching and the development of assessment methods. During this period, I worked with quizzes and exams in medical biochemistry, where students in groups of 10-12 people discussed the questions before we, as teachers, came and discussed them with them.
During my specialist training (2000-2007), I participated in instructor courses in ATLS and PHTLS, which led to the initiation of recurring trauma team exercises at Umeå University Hospital. This work resulted in me leading the development of team training in emergency care with human patient simulators within Region Västerbotten (2005-2011).
In 2011, I was employed as a senior lecturer and became a member of the Program council for the medical program. My first assignment was to introduce OSCE as an examination form for practical skills (2012). As the chair of the medical program (2014-2021), I became increasingly interested in examinations and took on the role of examiner for the National Board of Health and Welfare's knowledge test for doctors with education outside the EU/EEA area (2016).
Assessing students' practical performance has long been a challenge. Through a national initiative, ten specific core activities for the medical profession have been defined and are now being implemented in all Swedish medical programs. I have been part of the national working group since its inception and hope to continue with this central work on examinations.
Now, as associate dean, I am close to the issues of the implementation, quality, and development of professional education. Collaboration takes place in the ALF committee, the education board, and other meetings between the northern regions and the university. During 2023-2024, I also had the privilege of working even more centrally with these issues as a member of the National Health Competence Council.
