I am a senior lecturer and associate professor in anaesthesia and intensive care with a combined position as a consultant at Norrlands University Hospital. Additionally, I am the Associate Dean for Collaboration on Clinical Research and Education at the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

Current Assignments

Some major projects I am working on include:

  • Development and delivery of knowledge tests for doctors educated outside EU/EES (2016-).
  • Strategic leadership of Umeå University's complementary education for doctors with basic education outside the EU/EEA (2017-).
  • Decentralised education (2012-).

Research

On the research side, I am actively working to build networks between anaesthesia and intensive care units in the north. The clinical studies I particularly want to highlight are:

  • PostPal - a double-blind RCT on the effect of palonosetron on day surgery patients with a high risk of PONV on nausea during the first days. The first part of the study is published. The doctoral student is Antonio Moriatis. The main supervisor and PI is Jakob Walldén.
  • PECS-II - an RCT on the effect of PECS-II blockade on patients undergoing breast cancer surgery on the postoperative experience. The first part of the study is published. The PI is Joakim Johansson in Östersund.
  • Heart studies with Peter Gottfridsson and Ylva Stenberg as doctoral students. The main supervisors are Michael Haney and Tomi Myrberg.
  • LowOx, where we will investigate the effect of targeted oxygen concentration on the postoperative reduction in diffusion capacity previously reported by Karl Franklin's group. Karl Franklin is the PI, Magnus Hultin is the co-PI, and Erik Holmgren is the doctoral student.
  • Liquor flow during spinal headache after dural puncture. The PI is Laleh Zarrinkoob and the doctoral student is Erik Burman.
  • Cerebral blood flow in subarachnoid haemorrhage and the effect of Noradrenaline. The PI is Laleh Zarrinkoob and the doctoral student is Jonas Österlind.
  • Heparin-binding protein (HBP) in sepsis and pneumonia. The PI is Joakim Johansson and the doctoral student is Line Samuelsson.

Educational Research

  • Quality assurance of knowledge tests and factors associated with passing the knowledge test for foreign doctors.
  • Progress tests to strengthen learning in medicine.
  • Introduction of EPA at the national level as a system for feedback during patient-centred integrated learning.
  • Remote leadership - a project where we investigate how leadership in an emergency room in rural areas is affected by the leader being remote compared to being physically present in the room. Three manuscripts in the project has been published by the doctoral student is Hanna Morian, who will defend her thesis in February 2025. The main supervisor is Maria Härgestam. The PI is Johan Creutzfeldt.

Completed Projects

  • Situation Awareness - an RCT on the effect of training focused on how to quickly increase situational awareness in an emergency care situation affects the team's ability to effectively manage critically ill/injured patients. Karin Jonsson defended her thesis in January 2021 in the project.
  • PedPreMed - a double-blind RCT on the effect of midazolam, clonidine, and dexmedetomidine as premedication for 2-6-year-old children regarding the perioperative period (experience, haemodynamic stability, PONV) and the first two weeks after the patient has returned home. Patient inclusion is complete and the first three sub-studies are published. Åsa Bromfalk was a doctoral student in the project and defended her thesis in June 2024. The PI was Magnus Hultin.

I realise that I have been in the academic world for a long time, even though it feels like it was just recently that I defended my thesis on chylomicron metabolism at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics in Umeå. That was in 1995. Since then, I have completed my medical education, done my internship and residency in Umeå, and spent four years as a registrar at Lycksele Hospital, enjoying the adrenaline rushes as an ambulance helicopter doctor, before becoming a senior lecturer for Umeå University at Sunderby Hospital in 2011. The work brought me back to Umeå in 2018. A fantastic journey!
