Associate professor in occupational and environmental medical research at Sustainable Health and conducts research in air pollution, physical activity and health.
Johan Sommar has a master's degree in mathematical statistics and is an associate professor in occupational and environmental medical research at Sustainable Health and conducts research in air pollution, physical activity and health. Ongoing projects on health effects of air pollution are about the importance of particle exposures from various sources on mortality and morbidity in the form of mainly cardiovascular disease and cancer. Methodological in-depth studies deal with the importance of air pollution for subclinical outcomes such as atherosclerosis and the importance of exposure in different time windows. The research projects are also about active transport, and the potential for transferring car trips to bicycle. The health benefits that could be achieved by transferring car trips to bicycle are calculated in relation to physical activity, the air pollution exposure among commuters by bicycle or car and within the general population, but also consider the risk of accidents. Studies are also ongoing on the benefits of physical activity depending on the air pollution exposure at the residence.
