Hanna Jerndal is a medical doctor working in Anne-Marie Fors Connolly’s group. Her work is focusing on complications to COVID-19 in both register based and clinical cohort studies.
Hanna studied medicine at Umeå University, where she discovered her interest for infectious diseases, global health and epidemiology. She got a SIDA Minor Field Studies scholarship in 2016 to perform a project on early warning systems for Dengue in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In 2017, she got certified as a Disaster Medicine Trainer at Università del Piemonte Orientale (UPO) through the Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid and Global Health (CRIMEDIM) in Novara, Italy.
After she graduated from her studies in medicine in Umeå, she combined clinical work and research in infectious diseases, focusing on Tuberculosis and Puumala virus. In 2020 when SARS-CoV-2 was first introduced in Sweden, Hanna was part of the planning and coordination team for the CoVUm study in Umeå. In 2021, she was registered as a PhD-student in Anne-Marie Fors Connolly lab.
In her current projects, Hanna is investigating different acute and long-term complications to COVID-19 such as kidney injury, thrombosis, bleeding and arrhythmia. She is also working with the development of a disease severity index for viral diseases.
In 2021, Hanna got a stipend for young promising doctors in infectious diseases from the Folke Nordbring Fund. She has received several stipends and scholarships and has presented her work in international settings such as the World Congress of Nephrology 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.
